The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has corrected its firearm-injury webpage, lifting the published estimate of annual defensive gun uses to a range of 500,000 to 2.5 million. The agency raised the lower bound from 60,000 after restoring National Academies research it had removed in 2022. The change appeared in October 2026.
The prior floor of 60,000 treated lawful self-defense as a statistical footnote. The restored range puts defensive firearm use in the hundreds of thousands to millions of incidents every year. That is the scale long reflected in National Academies material the CDC had taken down, not a new political talking point.

In 2022 the agency stripped that research from its page and left the public with a truncated number. The correction multiplies the advertised lower bound more than eight times, from 60,000 to 500,000, and again cites an upper bound of 2.5 million defensive gun uses a year. Federal health pages are where city councils and attorneys general go for "the science." For four years they were handed the low number.
Defensive gun use is how the Second Amendment operates between court cases. A firearm that stops a robbery, a break-in, or an assault often never produces a body or a viral clip. Those events still count. They are the difference between a right that exists on paper and a right that keeps people alive when police are minutes away.
The CDC did not announce a new field study. It put back National Academies research it had already possessed and then deleted. Restoring that work is an admission that the 60,000 figure understated how often Americans use guns to protect life and property. The 2.5 million ceiling is now back on the same federal page that had buried it.
Public-health estimates drive statutes. When defensive uses are omitted, every magazine limit, waiting period, and "assault weapon" ban looks cheaper than it is. A range of 500,000 to 2.5 million defensive gun uses a year is a cost the CDC has now put back on the record. Legislatures that ignore it are choosing a statute over the facts.
What follows is whether the rest of the federal apparatus follows the correction or keeps recycling the abandoned 60,000 floor in grant language and hearing testimony. The right to keep and bear arms does not depend on a webpage. Officials who swear an oath to the Constitution are bound to stop using cooked numbers to justify carving that right down.
