This course is about Wind, Wind Effects, Mirage, and Secondary effects. Wind is the big one. You can learn wind for years and still be learning, and this 2 day course will give you a good foundation. The difference between top shooters when all else is equal with equipment and skills, is the ability to read and call wind. Yes, you can use a Kestrel weather meter to give you a good bracket based on wind direction, target direction, and all the secondary effects, but it stills involves you making choices.
The aim of this course will be to further your ability to generate your elevation at longer distances, increase your understanding of the secondary effects on your projectile (aerodynamic jump, spin drift and Coriolis effect) learn Mirage 2, Wind 2+3, and where wind has the most effect on your projectile and how fickle wind can be. You will learn how to use Ballistic Solvers intermediate level (i.e. Kestrel or AB Quantum App) and calculate for target direction, wind direction, wind speed, secondary effects and learn about calibrating your muzzle MV and other calibrations to make your Ballistic solver extremely accurate.
(Attendance of Part 2 of this course is a requirement. If you feel you don’t need to do part 2 because of your experience, please email me).
What you will learn at the Course:
- Calibrating your MV at 1000 yards to accurize your Ballistic Solver
- Calibrating the Compass direction on your Kestrel and setting target direction by degrees or the wind clock.
- Secondary effects of Aerodynamic Jump, Spin Drift and Coriolis.
- The effect of bullet altitude, bullet weight, BC and recoil effects.
- The effect the of wind across the distance to your target and how to judge the effects on your bullet with whatever indications are available.
- Shoot a min. of 100 rounds, that are on target at distances of 600 to 1000 yards using firing solutions (developed with Kestrel or AB Quantum App) with mirage reading and wind calls.
What you Need to attend:
1. Your Experience:
- Have shot your rifle, scope, ammo combination numerous times, have tested ammo to choose the best for your rifle, and you must have your scope zeroed and centered, and be able to 5 shot shoot groups of 1 MOA or less at 100 yards.
- Know your scope, rifle specs, and how it all works.
- Know how to slip your turrets on your scope, and have the tools needed to do that.

- DO NOT SPEED ON BASE. This is a training Base, and MPs will ticket and possibly escort you off the Base. Follow Speed limit signs.
50 km/h through centre of CFB Borden, 60 Km/h on Range Road, 15 Km/h on any range access road. Pass Marching Troops at a max of 15 km/h and less to be respectful.
- MATCH CANCELLATION BY MILITARY:
If the event is cancelled by the Military because they need the Range, then a full refund will be issued, if an alternate date does not suit you. This is not common and usually done well in advance due to CAF Range requirements.
- Because we shoot on a Military Range, Range Control can shut us down for a high Fire Index, Lightning or Storm Warning etc. This is out of our control, and there is no refund in that scenario. I have seen it happen only once in the last 10 years, but it’s part of shooting on a Military Range, and must be stated.
