What:
The Wednesday night steel program is an opportunity for BTSA club members and shooters from the broader community to experience the speed shooting sport of steel challenge. Steel challenge involves shooting 5 steel targets in 8 configurations several times each with the shooter’s cumulative time being their score. Time is added for misses and certain procedural infractions.
Steel challenge may be shot with either centrefire handguns, .22lr rimfire handguns, .22lr rimfire rifles, or pistol caliber carbines. No magnum calibres or steel core/steel jacketed ammo are permitted.
Wednesday night steel is run as a 4-stage match. Shooters with current USPSA membership will be able to receive a classification, provided they complete all 4 stages, when the classification system updates the following Wednesday.
Where:
BTSA range. Bay 1-5. Shooters may drop their gear at the top but please park down the road or in the lot as parking at the top is needed for match staff. The main road gate and BTSA gates are scheduled to be opened at 5:30 pm to allow entry for non-members but may be open earlier if members are already up to at the facility.
When:
Every: Wednesday from April 22 – September 16, 2026
Setup typically begins at 5:30pm and safety briefing at 6 pm unless otherwise stated at the top of the match description. We are typically done in about 2.5 hours. All competitors are expected to be present for setup and to remain for tear down. If you will be running late, please send the MD an email. Start times may move a little throughout the season to accommodate sunset times. Make sure to check the start time for each event.

Please email [email protected]
What to bring:
Work Gloves
Water
Food
Sunscreen
Hat
Eye/ear protection (required to participate)

Chamber flag for pcc/rimfire
5+ mags: You may participate with as many as you have. Someone on your squad will be able to help you reload as you shoot if you have 3-4 mags. Shooters with 1-2 mags will only be able to shoot their loaded magazines as reloading this much on the course will slow down the evening too much. 10 round magazines are strongly recommended for pcc shooters. Please pre-load your magazines at home when possible.
Ammo: 100 rounds minimum for 4 stages. Experienced shooters should bring 150-200. Novice shooters should bring 250.
Holster: belt holster for any Center fire handguns that fully covers the trigger. “concealment/IWB” holsters are not permitted. Rimfire guns are not drawn from the holster. It is best to bring a case/gun bag for these.
Gun belt for holster divisions
Shooter results:
Results will be posted to PractiScore, usually the same night. If you need your results to be anonymous, make sure to contact the match director well in advance.
First time shooters/new to steel challenge:
You must contact [email protected] if you will be coming out for your first steel challenge. We need to know what your previous experience level is and if we will have enough experienced staff to accommodate you. When you arrive, please leave all your gear in your vehicle and identify yourself to an official/person in charge. We will place you on a squad with some experienced shooters to help get you started. Please note, when a family member is on the line, they are under the care of the range officer. Please do not distract them from following the RO’s instructions. If the RO is unfamiliar with your particular firearm, they will ask for input as needed. If you would like coaching or advice while you are shooting, please let the RO know and they should be happy to oblige.
A note regarding classifications:
Classifications are used to help competitors measure their success against shooter shooting with a similar ability and skill set. A D class production shooter and a Grand Master rimfire rifle open shooter can’t be equally compared. In order to earn a classification, you must be a current USPSA member and complete any 4 stages in a single division. Classifications are specific to each division and do not carry over between Steel Challenge and USPSA. To check your classification, go to SCSA.org (not USPSA.org).
Rule book:
The official steel challenge rule book governs our Wednesday night matches please make sure to give it a read through so that you are familiar with the rules, commands, and equipment divisions.
****AT AN ABSOLUTE MINIMUM, ALL COMPETITORS SHOULD READ CHAPTERS 1,5,6,8, AND 10 AS THEY COVER SAFETY, BASIC RUNNING OF THE MATCH, AND DQ-ABLE OFFENCES******

Refunds
If you are withdrawing from the match, please email [email protected] for the most timely refund. Refunds for voluntary withdrawals will be less credit card processing fees and must be received by the registration closing date so we have a chance to attempt to fill the empty slot. If the match needs to be cancelled due to conditions or unexpected events, a full refund will be issued less any unrecoverable expenses (none are typical for weekend matches and this applies more to provincial/national matches)
